In the late evening hours of September 8, 2020, the Westlake Fire Department contacted the Office of State Fire Marshall requesting assistance determining the origin and cause of a house fire located in the 1200 block of Carroll Street.

Following assessment of the scene, investigators determined the fire was intentionally set.

Deputies learned first responders encountered Brent Ramirez, 42, who was renting the home, upon their arrival on scene. His behavior resulted in transport to a local hospital for evaluation.

In an interview with investigators, Ramirez admitted the fire began when he was engaging in illegal narcotics activities while refueling a generator located in the home’s living room.

Ramirez was placed under arrest and charged with one count of simple arson after his release from the hospital.
