Governor Edwards mentioned HB 57 briefly in his statement Tuesday night following the legislative session.

This is an extensive tort reform bill by Speaker Schexnayder that will:

  • lower the injury trial threshold from $50,000 to $10,000;
  • amend collateral source, limiting medical damages;
  • reform insurance coverage evidence; and
  • allow evidence in court of seat belt useage.

The bill passed the Legislature with overwhelming bi partisan support. The bill is currently awaiting Governor Edwards signature.

HB 57 will be effective January 1, 2021.
