On Sunday, August 4, 2019, the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM) to assist in determining the origin and cause of a burned truck found in a remote field located in the 6500 block of Highway 113 in Pitkin.
After an assessment of the scene, the fire was determined to have been intentionally set. The investigation conducted by the VPSO and SFM Deputies revealed that the truck had been reported stolen by the owner, Donald Johnson, just hours prior to the vehicle remains being discovered by hunters.
In an interview with investigators, Donald Johnson admitted to conspiring with his brother, John Johnson, and Katlyn Neal to burn the truck for insurance money due to it being in disrepair. Donald Johnson confessed that had had also burned another truck in August 2018 for the insurance money. Charges of Arson with Intent to Defraud regarding the 2018 case were booked today as well.
