About 6 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021, the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office regarding a vehicle pursuit headed south from Sabine Parish on U.S. Highway 171. SPSO indicated that the male driver, later identified as Tristen Dupuis, age 22, of Zwolle, had stolen the vehicle in Sabine Parish resulting in the pursuit.

VPSO Deputies and Troopers with the Louisiana State Police responded to the Hornbeck and Anacoco areas where they staged along the roadway. A short time later Deputies observed a light colored SUV, southbound, traveling at a high rate of speed.

VPSO Deputies, as well as LSP Troopers, joined in the pursuit of the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle entered into exit side of the parking lot of the Dollar General Store in Hornbeck where they struck a pickup truck which was in the process of exiting the parking lot. The suspect vehicle did not stop and reentered onto Highway 171 traveling South. The chase continued onto Highway 111 East and then onto Cold Springs Loop where it went out of the sight of Deputies. A short time later a Leesville Police Department unit encountered the vehicle which turned East onto Highway 28.

The driver of the vehicle continued to drive in an extremely reckless manner and speeds, at times, approached 120 mph.

The vehicle was pursued to the area of Laurel Hill Road where Dupuis drove through the locked gate of the High Hopes Hunting Club across from the Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

Dupuis fled from the stolen vehicle on foot into a densely wooded area. Deputies, Officers, and Troopers immediately established a perimeter of the immediate area. Sheriff Craft released an alert on social media to inform area residents of the situation and the increased presence of law enforcement within the community. LPD Officers and K9 as well as Retired VPSO Chase Team Supervisor Ricky Stephens and K9 Duke began a search of the immediate area.

The search continued throughout the night. VPSO Deputies took Dupuis into custody at approximately 6:55 a.m. after he was discovered hiding in the wood line by a lease road. Dupuis was wet and had lost his shoes at some point during the night. He was uninjured. Dupuis was transported to the VPSO jail and charged with

  • one count of Reckless Operation of a Vehicle,
  • one count of Illegal Possession of Stolen Goods,
  • one count of Criminal Damage to Property,
  • one count of Aggravated Assault,
  • one count of Hit and Run Driving, and
  • an out of jurisdiction warrant from Sabine Parish relating to the stolen vehicle.

Bond has not been set and Dupuis remains in the VPSO jail.
