The press release from Northwestern State University’s states the sculpture yard might be mistaken for a Little Shop of Horrors next week as a giant corpse flower, prepared to bloom.

The corpse flower is a rare and attractive tropical plant named for the rotten-meat stench its bloom produces. The first bloom on a plant may take 7-10 years following which blooms may occur anywhere from 2-3 years to another 7-10 years.

Profs. Millard Mangrun and Micael Scanlan, in the School of Biological and Physical Sciences are are working to set up a time-lapse camera to capture the flower as it blooms.

The plant was originally purchased in 2012 and according to Mangram may be the only one in Louisiana.
