Prior to last week, US Forest Service Agents contacted the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance with patrols in Kisatchie National Forest over Labor Day Weekend to ensure public safety and look for any criminal activity including underage alcohol consumption, illegal narcotics usage, reckless operation of vehicles, DWI and riding all-terrain vehicles in unauthorized areas.

A combined effort by Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and US Forest Service Law Enforcement Agents to patrol roadways, campgrounds and swimming areas led to four arrests, the seizure of alcoholic beverages, narcotics, and a handgun according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones. Law Enforcement also issued 4 speeding tickets and visited with families at the campgrounds and swimming areas.

On Saturday August 31, 2019, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies were conducting stationary patrols on the Longleaf Trail in Kisatchie National Forest when they observed occupants of a 2004 GMC Yukon discarding alcoholic beverage containers out of the vehicle into the ditch. During the traffic stop, deputies obtained consent to search the vehicle after smelling a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle led to ice chests filled with various alcoholic beverages, suspected marijuana and a Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

Jathan Johnson, 19, of the 700 block of Pecan Drive, Marksville, LA was issued a summons at the scene to appear in the Tenth Judicial District Court on October 28, 2019 for Illegal Possession of Alcoholic Beverages by Persons under the age of 21. Johnson was released pending his court appearance.

Rodney Price, 19, of the 800 block of Cork Street, Boyce, LA was issued a summons at the scene to appear in court on October 28, 2019 for Littering and Illegal Possession of Alcoholic Beverages by Persons under the age of 21. Price was released pending his court appearance.

Dalton A. Turner, 18, of the 2800 block of Hoyt Road, Boyce, LA was transported and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and two outstanding warrants through Pineville Police Department and the Caldwell Parish Sheriff’s Office. Turner remains in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center awaiting bond on Natchitoches charges and awaiting transfer to Pineville and Caldwell Parish.

Four other individuals under the age of 21 were not charged with any offenses.

The seized narcotics will be submitted to the crime lab for narcotics analysis.

On Monday afternoon, September 2, 2019, at approximately 5:46 p.m., NPSO Deputies stopped a white Chevrolet pickup truck on the Longleaf Trail for Speeding 54 miles per hour in a posted 35 mph speed zone. The operator truck, 21-year-old Tyler Poche of Campti, was transported and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with Speeding 54/35 and Driving under Suspension due to a prior DWI. Poche was released on bond set by a Tenth Judicial District Court Judge.

During the course of the special detail, deputies also issued three additional traffic citations for Speeding and visited with families at campgrounds and in swimming areas who thanked them and the US Forest Service for the presence in the area making them feel safe.

Our efforts during this operation were to ensure visitors of Kisatchie National Forest felt safe with a family fun weekend without any problems.
