Early Tuesday morning, an incident occurred following a traffic stop in Newton that ended in a head on collision with a Newton Police vehicle. KJAS in Jasper, TX reports that more information has been released and a slightly different version of events has been given by Newton County Deputy Landon Cargill.
According to Cargill he didn't fight the driver of the vehicle stopped near the Newton County Courthouse. The suspect was a passenger who refused to be detained. Following a foot pursuit, Cargill caught and fought with the suspect for 15-20 seconds before an off duty officer assisted him. The suspect attempted to grab Cargill's duty pistol. The officers released the suspect to allow Cargill to utilize his taser, which had no effect.
The male kept running and entered the driver’s seat of my patrol car where he then drove off at a high rate of speed.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody and was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital were it was determined he was under the influence of both meth and PCP.
29-year old Michael Land Jr is charged with attempt to take weapon from officer, and Chief Deputy Cynthia Hall says more charges are expected to be filed. Land's bond amount was not available as of Thursday.
