The Vernon Parish School Board met at 10:00 this morning to set the agenda for Tuesdays regularly scheduled meeting.
Tim Ward discussed the compliance questionnaires for the school board and the Vernon Parish Sales Tax Agency that need to be approved as part of the annual audit procedure. The answers on the questionnaires show that the board is following the laws and procedures. Mr Ward noted that auditors will be here at the end of the month.
Hub Jordan recommended a change to the Policy Manual changing the wording regarding immunizations from listing specific childhood diseases and opening the wording to say “the schedule according the to department of public health”. This change means the policy doesn't have to be rewritten every time the immunization schedules are adjusted.
Mr. Jordan also presented requests from District high school Principals to change the statement in the student handbook regarding male facial hair to read that they may have neat well-groomed facial hair. Implementation would be at the discretion of the individual principals. It was noted that other districts have relaxed their policies on this subject recently. The second request from teachers was to leave female wearing of earrings as written, but to add a statement banning the wearing of gauges and plugs in the ears by both male and female students.
Renita Page presented the additions and upgrades to the district web-page and showcased the new and improved pages for the individual schools. The next step is adding the individual pages for teachers and principals.
Ann Smith and Renita Page presented information on the first annual Vernon Parish Teacher Institute which was held in June. This professional development event was led by Parish teachers and was used to remove the need to pull classroom teachers out of the classroom for professional development during the school year. 225 teachers participated in 2323 hours of professional development. The event was funded using money provided by the Rapides Foundation grant.
Lastly, the Personnel Committee met this morning and is adding a request to advertise for an Assistant Principal at Simpson High School.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2019, in the Vernon Parish School Board Conference Room at 10:00 a.m.
