LEESVILLE -- The City of Leesville has announced the winners of the city's "Mayor for a Day" contest.

Division 1 winner for grades 3-5 is Kushal Upadhyay, 4th grade student at Faith Training Christian Academy. He will be mayor for a day on Feb. 8.

Division 2 winner for grades 6-8 is Jayden Cortez, 6th grade student at Vernon Middle School, who will be mayor for a day on Feb. 22.

Division 3 winner for grades 9-12 is Terrell Newman, 10th grade student at Faith Training Christian Academy, who will be mayor for a day on March 14.

The winners will spend their day as mayor touring city facilities, hanging out with Mayor Rick Allen and presenting in a City Council meeting.

"We're excited to be able to provide this opportunity to Leesville students. We wanted to create a program that would help students to learn more about local government and to hopefully inspire them to become more involved in making their city a better place when they get older," Allen said. "I'm looking forward to spending a day with each of these students and listening to their ideas."

The students will participate in Saturday's Vernon Parish Mardi Gras Parade and will ride on the city's float.
